The Youth Sponsorship Program at Fort Wainwright

What is sponsorship?

It is meeting and helping youth who are new to Fort Wainwright.  Sponsors provide newcomers with warm welcome and information.  They serve as a friendly first point of contact in Fairbanks.

Why is sponsorship important?

It can be hard to leave your home and friends when you move to a new place.  New youth don’t know what to expect when they arrive here.  They don’t know what Alaska is like or where to go to make friends.  Through sponsorship, everyone can have fun and learn more about each other.

How does sponsorship work?

Local Fort Wainwright youth volunteer to serve as sponsors.  Newcomers request a sponsor and are matched to someone near their own age.  The first contacts are usually made via email, but sponsorship can also involve getting together when the new person arrives.
