Military Student Support Programs
Counselor Training
Most district counselors have completed training in issues students from
military families face. Many have also been trained to deliver a special
Resiliency Program designed to help children adjust to a family member’s
deployment.
ASACS (Adolescent Substance Abuse
Counseling Service)
ASACS is an evaluation, education, and counseling program aimed at keeping
adolescents substance-free. Any military dependent between the ages of 12 and
18 is eligible and can be referred to the ASACS program for counseling
services. Please call 353-1382.
Miltary Teen Voice Groups
MTV Groups are available in district middle and high schools. The
groups meet during the school day and are open to military students and
friends. The groups provide camaraderie and a positive environment for military
teens. Each group defines its own specific projects and goals.
Army Senior Stabilization Program
Soldiers request, through their chain of command, to remain in their current
assignment so that their children may complete their senior year.
ICC (Interactive Counseling Center)
Amy high school students transferring in or out of the Fairbanks North Star
Borough School District (FNSBSD) can utilize the Interactive Counseling Center (ICC),
located at Lathrop High School in the Counseling office. Through the ICC, a
student can transfer documents to the gaining high school prior to moving, get
up-to-date information about credit transfers, sports try-outs, and anything
else that may be of interest.
Student 2 Student
The Military Child Education Coalition trains a school-based team to support
students transitioning to or from their school. This program is currently
available at Lathrop High School.
Deployment Support
Students and families going through a deployment get plenty of support and
understanding from the schools and the Fairbanks North Star Borough School
District. Many school principals, counselors, and teachers have worked with
students throughout the deployment cycle and are attuned to what families and
children are dealing with.
Parents can help schools support their students by notifying the school as soon as they know their family will be impacted by deployment.
Many schools offer special deployment
support groups. Affected students are encouraged, but not forced, to
participate. In these groups, the emphasis is on fun and expressing feelings.
Kids may work on crafts, items to send overseas, journals, etc.
